Street Art

An urban encounter with an ocean view

When Tone Andal returned to her hometown Måløy in 2010, she quickly became aware of Måløy’s potential as a street art town, with all its grey and worn out walls.

Due to the Måløy raid during World War II, large parts of Måløy were bombed and burned down, and the town lost most of its older wooden houses, characteristic boathouses. Since then, large industrial buildings and concrete blocks were built in the 1950s, which to this day characterizes this town. A perfect starting point to turn grey stone into gold.

Andal had lived in Oslo for several years, in an artist district where the walls were diligently painted by various graffiti artists. She now lives and works in Måløy with the “street art” project in addition to working with her own art.

Today you will find as many as 20 murals in the Måløy region, most of which can be seen within walking distance in the town center.

The Goldfisherman

by Stepan Bares og Gaute Haugland

Stepan Bares comes from Siberia but lives in Bergen where he works as a graffiti artist and specializes in the decoration of “Russ busses”(busses usually bought or rented for groups of graduation high school students) and the like. Artist Gaute Haugland also lives in Bergen. In September 2017, Stepan and Gaute painted Måløy's first mural. This shows a weather-beaten fisherman scouting across the stormy sea. Around him, the seagulls flutter, and around his neck, a thick golden chain. This is meant to show that fishing is still lucrative, but also that there has probably been a lot of "mafia activity" in this industry in Måløy through the ages. The painting was a great success among the locals and showed that this was something we wanted more of.

The painting can be found in street 1 no. 26 by the shop Bekka, close to Måløy guest harbour.

The Rainbow Crab

by M.U.M.

About a month after the first mural was painted, artist M.U.M. came to Måløy with his new painting and ready to deliver right before the winter season. M.U.M. comes from Chile, but lives and works in Bergen. His paintings are recognizable by their vibrant colours and clear messages of peace, love and respect for nature. The crab, painted in Måløy has a claw, shaped like a cello, and if you look closer you can see that the strings of the cello are in all the colours of the rainbow. This symbolizes that love is love and that it is free for all.

The painting can be found in street 1 no. 55, by the shop Jobbpartner.

Mural 3

Sturgeon

by Mikael Noguchi

Illustrator Mikael Noguchi (Japan / Sweden / Norway) came to Måløy in June 2018 and performed three jobs here. One shows four fishermen posing proudly in front of a mackerel sturgeon. This is the largest tuna species, and among the fastest of all bonefish with a speed of up to 66 km / h. The painting is inspired by old black and white photographs of fishermen in Måløy in the 50s. The mackerel sturgeon is highly endangered, and in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research, Nordfjord Havfiskeklubb is working to enter into a “branding project” of the fish so that it once again becomes sustainable.

The painting can be found on Lekteren in Måløy, close to where the express boat from Bergen docks.

Fishing boat

by Mikael Noguchi

This is the second painting Noguchi painted in Måløy in June 2018. You see it displayed next to the fishermen and the mackerel sturgeon. There you can see a fishing boat, and if you stand in exactly the right spot, it looks like the painting of the fishing boat and the mackerel sturgeon is painted on the same wall.

Pinup

by Eric Ness Christiansen

In August 2018, artist Eric Ness Christiansen (Drammen) came to Måløy to paint in the village of Refvik. He got carte blanche to do as he wished on a large barn wall out there, and you can see the result, an absolutely stunning piece of art.

Take a trip to the fantastic Refvik village by Norway's finest beach and take a look!

Mural 10

Coastal Women

by Mikael Noguchi

In May 2019, Måløy's street art project continued. This time it was the “coastal women”'s turn to be honoured. And who could fit the job better than Mikael Noguchi, who had already interpreted old black-and-white photographs of local fishermen with the mackerel sturgeon? The job began with collecting photographs from women who worked at fish stalls and the like in the Måløy area, Noguchi then made an interpretation of these, which he painted on the other side of the Barge.

Between the men with the sturgeon and the hard-working ladies, you see some children running with fish that they have stolen. This is based on true stories as the children often stole some “Dried cod” which they so proudly sold to other children. Dried Cod was known as a Saturday candy at the time!

Dove 1-2-3

by Kim Larsen (Sinnsykshit)

Oslo resident Kim Larsen, also known as Sinnsykshit, came to Måløy in August 2019 to create a series of three paintings. These were the first not to be inspired by local culture and history. Here Larsen got free rein to make something he himself thought was cool. You can see the result outside Kiwi by the square in the centre of Måløy.

Mural 12

Bird

by Peter John De Villiers

A few weeks after Sinnsykshit was done, South African Peter John De Villiers had the opportunity to come around the end of 2019. De Villiers is represented by ByHands, the country's most powerful illustration agency. Since he lives in Stad, it was a short way to get him here. The motif he chose was a great tit, a bird that is abundant in the area. This is the first mural in Måløy that has been painted with a brush.

Mural 13

Black lives matter

by Anette Moi

2020 was blessed with one mural in Måløy. This is painted by star illustrator Anette Moi, and is located at the junior high school in gate 5. The idea was that the painting should meet several age groups, as it includes toddlers, teenagers and grandparents by the wall, which is behind some trampolines. A popular meeting place for both young and old. At first glance, the figures are childish and simple, and will easily appeal to the little ones. But if you look closer, important topics such as anti-racism, environmental protection and free love are represented, well wrapped in a good dose of humour.

Mural 14

The Seagull Poo

by Anette Moi

The seagull is a familiar sight on the coast of Norway. For those who have been in close contact with one, especially during the breeding season, may have experienced getting a seagull poo on their head. The man with the seagull poo, painted by Anette Moi, is am amusing sight in the center of Måløy.

Mural 15

Ms Moldøen

by Eric Ness Christiansen og Mikael Noguchi

At Moldøen, under the Måløy Bridge, you can see a colourful mural that welcomes anyone travelling by boat to Måløy. It illustrates "Måløy" in pink writing, with different elements such as what is typical of the coastal city. These elements range from fishing boats, killer whales, seagulls, and Kannesteinen. The mural is made by Eric Ness Christiansen and Mikael Noguchi.

Mural 16

Bugjerde

by Mikael Noguchi

The mural is one of three found in the village of Refvik. This was painted by the artist Mikael Noguchi, and was completed in September 2020. The painting illustrates the farm Bugjerde, which was one of several farms in Refvik. It shows some of the animals they had, and two of the family members who ran the farm.

Mural 17

The Eagle

by Fredrik Fiasko

Created by "up and coming" artist Fredrik Fiasko is a large and colored eagle. This came on the wall in September 2020. The eagle is shown picking up the plastic after him - a message that we must take care of nature.

Mural 18

by Kim Kolstad / Polykrom

In the middle of the square in Måløy is the resturant Havfruen. In connection with the development of the restaurant in 2021, Kim Kolstad from the graffiti team Polykrom was commissioned to decorate one of the walls with a mural.

Mural 20

Broken Umbrella

by Sam Bates

SmugOne aka Sam Bates did two murals during his time in Måløy. The first project was "Broken Umbrella", which is of a man who is trying to get through a storm. It was painted in October 2021. This also represents well the harsh conditions we have almost all year round in Måløy.

Mural 20

Dogfish

by Sam Bates

Dogfish was the second mural by artist SmugOne, also painted in October 2021. There has always been a lot of dogfish in Måløy, and large quantities were fished. It's a big part of the city's fishing history.
